This coming Sunday is Trinity Sunday. The foundation of our faith is within the trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit–one God in three persons. The concept is something we accept by faith but is hard to understand.
I think of myself as several persons in one–wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and that’s as close as I’ve come to any comprehension of the trinity. However, at different times, I pray to the Father or the Son or the Spirit. When I do, I don’t think of them being One.
If you struggle as I do, God’s word has helped me, and I hope it will help you. All three persons show up at the baptism of Jesus. “As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased'” (Matthew 3:13-17).
THINK ABOUT IT
Even though the disciples were with Jesus a long time, they didn’t think of Jesus being God. “Philip said, ‘Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.’ Jesus answered: ‘Don’t you know me Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me . . .” (John 14:6-19).
Accept in your heart today that God IS Father, Son and Spirit. Let Him live in you so others might see His love and mercy at work in the things you do, and that they would experience His love and believe.
PRAY ABOUT IT
O Lord, you are wonderful in all your ways–too wonderful for words. Draw us close to you by your word, that we might understand more about you every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
