Finding Peace

Christmas is a difficult time for many people, especially after a year like we’ve had in 2020. The isolation seems to magnify feelings of despair due to loss of work, health or loved ones. Those separated from friends or family due to failure in life or relationships find every Christmas challenging. We see photos and movies of picture perfect people enjoying a beautiful life and feel left out. Anxiety and loneliness trap us into withdrawal.

I want to tell you God knows. He sees broken hearts and shattered dreams. He is aware of every emotion, and He is willing and able to come to our rescue. He says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

Peace is the anecdote to fear, anxiety and despair. After Jesus’ crucifixion, the disciples gathered in the upper room, afraid of the Jews. Then the resurrected Savior appeared in their midst. “Peace be with you,” Jesus said (Luke 24:36). This is the peace we need in our hearts to overcome the darkness that shrouds our world. God’s peace passes understanding.

THINK ABOUT IT

Without God in our lives we experience fear and anxiety, feelings of emptiness even if we have great wealth and possessions. Don’t fall into the temptation to cling to worldly things. They are here today and gone tomorrow. Put your hope in God and find everlasting peace, a fulfilled life of purpose and God’s amazing love poured out to us as springs of living water.

PRAY ABOUT IT

Heavenly Father, thank you for Jesus. Thank you for the gift of peace, a peace we cannot comprehend. When our situations trouble us, remind us by your Spirit to look to you for comfort and peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Author of more than two hundred articles, devotions and stories, my book, A CLOSER WALK WITH GOD, is a compilation of devotions from my visit to Israel. The Bible came alive to me, and I discovered I was not only walking where Jesus and the prophets walked; I was walking closer with God. I have taught Sunday school more than twenty years, mentored young women and volunteered as a hospital chaplain. Today I lead Women's Bible studies in my home, and I write a blog at A Closer Walk With God-Devotions from a Journey Through the Holy Lands. Visit often and/or subscribe/follow.
